THEME
June 20, 2012, I said “I do” at the alter to this incredible man. We’ve had highs, and we’ve had our lows. We went through our families disapproving (mostly mine). I’m originally from the east coast and I met my husband online. I wasn’t expecting to find a husband out of it, but we both fell in love almost instantly. A long distance relationship wasn’t okay in the eyes of my newly divorced parents. They fought me, threatened me, forbid me from speaking to him, and even said charges would be pressed against him. So much more was going on behind the scenes and much like A character in a book I have recently read, I had to get out. I moved halfway across the country at the chance the love we had for each other was actually what we were trying to convince everyone of. When we were making arrangements for the wedding, my family had been very vocal about their disinterest in attending. So we decided to marry with only his side of the family and one friend in the pews. When my family found out, they were horrified and stunned that what they were hoping would never happen, actually did. After public humiliation (literally) manipulation attempts, and what was supposed to be a happy visit home turned horribly wrong, along with almost two years since I hopped a plane halfway across the country, my family has finally come around. We very recently celebrated our 2 year wedding anniversary and we have been completely (for the most part) accepted by my entire side of the family.
So here’s to all those tumblr couples out there, or those of you with a long distance relationship that have family members and friends telling you they never work but you still fight for it. Here’s the truth: long distance relationships DO work. Me and my husband are living proof as well as the absolutely lovely tumblr famous couple parkingstrange. The key to success is simple, you must fight for it. There’s been times where I felt isolated and vise versa for him. Both him and I have gone through cancer scares and in his case, a positive cancer test. We both had tumors removed that were possible of malignancy. There’s been times where he didn’t understand the sacrifice I made for him and for us. But we kept fighting. And you need to keep fighting. Absolutely everyone deserves a chance to have a love like this. And trust me it’s so worth it. Because there is nothing like the feeling of waking up in the middle of the night and see him breathing next to me and the peace it brings. Love is worth the fight. I promise.
